New “Sherlock Holmes” Trailer
TheBadandUgly.com —
Trailers from Guy Ritchie’s upcoming Sherlock Holmes film starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams hit the internet recently and are sure to spark plenty of discussion.
As a big fan of the original stories, my initial response is that this will be a much more in-your-face version of the beloved character. Holmes is a competent boxer and is decent with a revolver in the older stories, but these facts are hardly celebrated. The movie looks like it will place action in the foreground, perhaps even over the mystery elements. It also appears that the Sherlock Holmes that is often “asexual” has been removed for ...
Trailer Review: Sherlock Holmes
The Screengrab —
As I’m sure many of you can guess, Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes isn’t exactly at the top of my must-see list for 2009. Really, this trailer is pretty much what I expected from this combination of material and director- wacky camera angles, bare-knuckle boxing matches, and lotsa stuff blowing up. What’s more, the oafish “lad” humor that’s shown up in all of Ritchie’s other films to date is also well in evidence here too, which the frat boys might enjoy but has never really done much for me. So any interest I have in this project comes from the cast, which is actually pretty intriguing ...
How Accurate Is Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes?
Movie Moron —
Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes isn’t due for release until December, but many fans of the sleuth legend are already upset with what appears to be a slightly Pirates-of-the-Caribbean take on the material. But is Sir Arthur C.D. really turning in his grave? How accurate is Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes?
The trailer seems to confirm rumours that Ritchie has gone for a sexier, more action-oriented Holmes, with Robert Downey Jr. bare-knuckle-brawling and getting up close and personal with Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler. But is this such a leap? I’ve read most of the ...
Hell For The Holidays
Hollywood Elsewhere —
Hell For The Holidays I decided a year ago that Guy Ritchie 's Sherlock Holmes (Warner Bros., 12.25) movie would be largely dismissable. Because I knew it would be made, like all super-expensive high-concept CG adventures, for the under-25 mongrel moviegoing culture which "doesn't want to know from 19th Century London" and "cares only about eating popcorn and scratching their balls during the trailers." About eight months ago a Sarah Lyall N.Y. Times article reiterated the same impression. "This is surely evidence of a degraded culture," I responded . "The general dilution and animalization of rarified values ...
Top Ten Anti-Heroes – Jim’s Picks
Movie Mobsters —
I have always been a huge fan of the underdog, or the hero that has a dark side to him, or the horribly bad guy that decides to risk his life to save the lives of others. With that being said here are my picks for this weeks top ten! 10. Clarence Worley Clarence Worley True Romance (1993) Believe it or not I went into True Romance not knowing what it was about and came out blown away with one of the most memorable films I had ever seen. Wonderful characters that acted on impulse and a stellar cast added to the coolness of this film. Clarence Worley is definitely an anti hero because despite killing a pimp and stealing a mobsters cocaine as the audience you ...

Monster Madness: Creature #13
Movie Mobsters —
The Giant Octopus from Bride Of The Monster bride of the monster Over the years some people have referred to Ed Wood’s flicks and monsters as campy and even Bela Lugosi as a bottom feeder, but I’ve always found those movies to have a certain charm. Cheesy, yes, but they were a lot of fun and even sometimes pretty eerie. Bride Of The Monster is no exception to this collection of Ed Wood films. The mad scientist Dr. Vornoff (played by Lugosi) is trying to make superhuman creatures using radiation treatment. So far he’s achieved a menacing giant Octopus, but otherwise most of his attempts have resulted in failure. When hunters are heading for his house of doom ...
