COOL TRAILER ROUNDUP… SHUTTER ISLAND! DAYBREAKERS! THE CRYPT! CARRIERS! by DARK SIDE
The Small Town Critic —
A couple of these trailers are a few weeks old, but chances are you haven’t seen them. These snuck in like a ninja goin’ behind enemy lines to rescue his army buddies from the Vietcong. Very mysterious that I haven’t heard of these until they were upon me… especially considering one is a Scorsese film. [image] SHUTTER ISLAND. This looks like Scorsese’s first venture into horror, or at least psychological thriller since his overrated remake of “Cape Fear.” Speaking of overrated, I hate DiCaprio. There I said it. He’s wimpy, whiny and still looks like he’s 13, making him unsuitable for most of the roles he scores. I rejoiced the day he turned down “American ...
Mincing Crudup/Brando
Hollywood Elsewhere —
Mincing Crudup/Brando Listen to the real J. Edgar Hoover here and here -- his way of speaking was clipped and municipal, but there was no trace of a British accent or a speech tendency that was anything close to fey or foppish (in a tinsel-and-cold-cream Marlon Brando/ Mutiny on the Bounty sense ). But Billy Crudup 's Hoover in Public Enemies (listen to a clip of him speaking from the 55 to 1:01 marks in this hi-def trailer ) is clearly doing that. He sounds like an English swell, a country club type, an Oxford debating star. Why?
David Cronenberg’s CRASH (1996) reviewed in 159 one-word statements. by DARK SIDE
The Small Town Critic —
[image] No, not that lame, heavy-handed racial character study starring Sandra Bullock and Don Cheadle. This one won a Cannes Special Jury Prize for “Daring, Audacity and Originality.” It premiered with a limited run in America with an NC-17 rating. It stars James Spader, Holly Hunter, Deborah Unger, Rosanna Arquette and Elias Koteas. [image] Its experimental nature inspired me to do some experimenting of my own. Instead of a run-of-the-mill plot description how about one in haiku form?… Weird effin’ weirdos Crashing cars and having sex Quite self destructive Nifty. Now for the actual synopsis/review in 159 one-word statements (Tip: It’s more fun to read if ...

The Small Town Critic —
[image] If you don’t have a big cinema multiplex in your hometown, you can venture an hour or more to a city that does or you can choose to stay home and watch a DVD. For the sake of convenience most choose a night at home with a DVD. But what are your options when your local Blockbuster Video store goes out of business as it did recently in my how town of Clarksdale, Mississippi ...
