Is Joaquin Phoenix The New Crispin Glover?

He says there's "no turning back," on his retirement, btw, in yet another interview. Video via Rope of Silicon who posted it on Twitter. The Playlist - The sweet spot where movies and music meet.

Joaquin Gets Weird on Letterman
Get The Big Picture —
Joaquin Phoenix made a stop on The Late Show tonight to promote Two Lovers, his final film, and...uh, wow. What in the hell has happened to this guy?
Letterman's pretty much justified in making fun of the guy. I mean, he can't let some wayward trucker hijack the show with silence for eight minutes.
Career Watch: Joaquin Phoenix Self-Destructs on Letterman
Thompson On Hollywood —
I take no pleasure in watching this train wreck of a performance on David Letterman. I love Joaquin Phoenix's work in Two Lovers--but the folks marketing the movie should ever have put a guy in the shape that Phoenix is in on national television. He could barely talk. I hope he gets his act together. Soon. "I'll come to your house and chew gum," said a pissed off ...

Joaquin Phoenix channels the spirit of Crispin Glover on Letterman
Film | guardian.co.uk —
It's hard not to laugh at Joaquin Phoenix, when he's falling off the stage while performing shambolic, mumbled "hip-hop" to confused fans at a Vegas nightclub, and especially when he turns up on David Letterman, as he did last night, looking like one of the Doobie brothers and trainwrecking furiously while his host asked questions such as: ...
Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie
F L I C K H E A D —
Last night’s David Letterman Show offered the soon-to-be-notorious Joaquin Phoenix ‘interview.’ He’s promoting, if you will, Two Lovers (2009), a film coming out theatrically this Friday but has been available to Comcast cable TV subscribers for the past month — a bizarre approach to ...
Watch This: Joaquin Phoenix is a Complete Mess
Cinematical —
So what's up with Joaquin Phoenix? It started when he announced that he was quitting acting to pursue a music career, then got stranger when said music career became a rap album. After we began to prepare ourselves for the new hip-hopped Phoenix, along came word that he and Casey Affleck would be shooting an "art project" (aka documentary) about Phoenix's journey from acting to music ... and then a little while after that we got word that the whole thing could, in fact, be one big joke, a la some Borat-style shenanigans. However, while out doing press for his new film Two Lovers, I've heard from ...
Joaquin Phoenix: Genius or Crazy?
For Cinephiles by a Cinefille —
Last night actor-turned-rapper-turned-turned-man-with-questionable-sanity appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman. Phoenix appeared to promote his film Two Lovers... and to share about his new found rapping skillz. Watching the interview you get a sense that Phoenix has probably lost his mind. Or has he?
Joaquin Phoenix continues hoax on Letterman
Scene-Stealers —
What’s the point?
I called it without ever having seen any video of him rapping, but it’s pretty clear that Joaquin Phoenix’s self-imposed retirement from acting to pursue a career as a rapper is a hoax. As soon as the news broke that his brother-in-law Casey Affleck would be directing a documentary about his decision, it was pretty obvious that some “Borat”-style shenanigans were going on. Ironically, to prove my point in my original blog, I posted a video from “Late Night with David Letterman” of Andy Kaufman’s similar wrestling hoax (in which he conspired with real-life wrestler ...

Anyone want to take any guess as to if Joaquin Phoenix has seriously stopped acting in order to pursue a rap career? We’ve been following this since Phoenix’s beard was just some normal stubble threatening to go wild.
His recent appearance on Letterman has some people claiming that he ended his career on national television. Others claim that Casey Affleck’s documentation of Joaquin’s sudden transformation will actually end up being a documentary about this full prank. It’s safe to say that this prank is going on under the noses of most people, because ...
Performance Art or Just Another Hollywood Implosion?
Film Experience Blog —
Joaquin Phoenix on David Letterman last night, ostensibly to push his "last film" Two Lovers upon us. If the homeless beard and the 'i'm quitting acting for hip hop' announcements weren't odd enough these past few months, his behavior here is. It's painful to watch though the every quick Letterman makes the most of it. Is the continual crowd chuckling merely uncomfortable reflex or do they find the larger performance joke that Phoenix is having on all of us amusing? Here's my question: If Phoenix's ruined career is the complicated hoax many believe it to be, ...
Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman - Is the Hoax Still Uncertain? Today in Film Bloggery 02/12/09
SpoutBlog —
By the time Casey Affleck’s documentary (or mockumentary) on Joaquin Phoenix’s retirement from acting and subsequent rap career is finished, will anyone still care about any of it? If today’s frenzy over Phoenix’s appearance last night on Late Show with David Letterman is any indication, I’m guessing that many people will. I seriously thought the story was beyond tired at this point, especially after the very believable accusations that Phoenix’s career change and behavior are nothing but a Borat- or Punk’d- or Andy Kaufman-like prank. From looking at some of the reactions today, though, I ...

Joaquin Phoenix on David Letterman
Film Gecko —
I would be completely remiss if I didn’t post this bizarre video of Joaquin Phoenix on “The Late Show with David Letterman” the other night. What do you think? Was he pulling a publicity stunt, or was he just totally drugged and/or out of it? And is this really the kind of publicity you want? Really?! Go back to acting, Joaquin! You were a great actor! ...
What's Next for Joaquin? Locusts?
Carpetbagger —
Joaquin Phoenix’s addled appearance on “Late Show With David Letterman” the other night probably didn’t do his already corroded public image much good, even if it is all a hoax . (And it probably didn’t do any favors for his n ew movie, “Two Lovers.” But look on the bright side. The Bagger covered him in 2005 when he was up for “Walk the Line,” and we can all be thankful he has finally gotten rid of t he frogs in his hair .
