What an excellent tribute to the late great movie voiceover guy Don LaFontaine. No need for more words, because the Voice already says it all:
Movie press release deconstruction: the REAL message of the new “Transformers” theme park ride.
Burbanked —
There’s been a whole lot of breathless squabbling going on about the announcement from Universal that they’re planning to add a “Transformers” ride attraction to their theme parks in Singapore and Hollywood. And while some may view this as good news to fans of overpriced amusements worldwide, I think you deserve to know the real story behind the new ride - especially because, in order to build it, Universal will scuttle its classic 1992-ish “Backdraft” attraction, a decision which impacts me personally and inconsolably. Here’s a look at the press release, with my clarifications into the PR flack’s lingo below. awesome press release! Rather than following the ...
Joaquin Phoenix’s desire to retire: we should have seen the Signs.
Burbanked —
I tend to be more or less of a heartless bastard when it comes to the fading and extinguishing lights of Hollywood talent, but there have been times when legends pass into the night and I get an emotional tickle in my throat. We’ve seen both Sydney Pollack and Paul Newman go in the last year, and those kinds of losses just sting with the punch of an unfair universe. Especially when we devote so much attention and hand-wringing to the media-pandering exploits of something like a Joaquin Phoenix retirement announcement ...
Tagged by the Alphabet Movie Meme: this time it’s personal.
Burbanked —
now i know my abcs See, this is what the blogging mindset does to you: just because my pal Piper tagged me with this Alphabet Meme nearly a week ago - which is roughly four months in blogging years - I feel haunted and vexed and tormented to respond, despite the fact that I’ve been unable to craft an exciting, dynamic and otherwise interesting response. The rule of the meme is to create a list of movies from A to Z. That’s about it. No twist, no trick, no other hook into my particular insight or critical thinking, merely an exercise to prove that I remember all of the letters of our customary alphabet. So it’s taken me six days to conjure the list below only because I ...
James Bond movies and the shaky-cam action aesthetic - is this progress?
Burbanked —
“Forster tries to make up for his lack of action-film experience with jittery fight scenes that are ultimately more confusing than exciting.” ( NY Daily News )“…the haphazard direction of Marc Forster, who demonstrates by negative example why Bond movies are best served by journeymen with something to prove rather than would-be A-listers slumming it.” ( Village Voice )“You do not make an action sequence more interesting by intercutting it with some unrelated event; you make an action sequence interesting by making it interesting…Forster doesn’t have the skill - or the capacity - to recognize that activity is not action.” ( Cinematical )“Forster…shoots and edits his ...

11.14.2008 I’m not sure how to say it nicely: This one-sheet is crap. not so much funny ( additional thoughts about Apatow/Sandler’s collaboration here ) ( 0 ) 10.23.2008 What an excellent tribute to the late great movie voiceover guy Don LaFontaine. No need for more words, because the Voice already says it all: See more funny videos at Funny or Die ( 5 ) 10.14.2008 Wow! I have to say I’m a bit surprised by the marketing tactics behind this new Katherine Heigl one-sheet. home is where the heart is It’s a little wordy for my taste, but one has to admire the bold honesty of putting it out there. Seeking the kind and vaguely dishonest assistance of the resourceful Burbanked readership.

Okay, I need your help here. Sonny, Michael Corleone and Tom Hagen keep bringing up the fact that they want to go see Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa . this makes my stomach have to move it move it How do I get out of this? I love going to the movies with the boys, opening up their minds to the great pleasures of cinema and all that , but this is a hard one. Please help me: do I suck it up and just go, or can anyone out there provide me with a plausible, kind-hearted, permanent way out?
More X-Men to get younger, film fans to get dumber, Hollywood to rub its collective hands in greed and avarice.

show of hands: who hates ratner? In its never-ending effort to run its valuable properties not just right into the ground but also beat them and shred them and burn, stomp and otherwise destroy them beyond all possible recognition until suddenly they’re new and then begin the whole thing all over again, Hollywood seeks to further “leverage” its X-Men properties into yet another movie tangent. Variety ...
Really, how important would a “story” have been to Indiana Jones V, anyway?
Burbanked —
lucas. why did it have to be lucas? Dedicated screenwriting 101 here: From an interview with Harrison Ford on the MTV Movies Blog in which the inevitability of another Indiana Jones movie is mentioned: MTV : Is the ball in George’s court at this point? Ford : It is. That’s the process. With some general input he goes off and searches for the MacGuffin and then stumbles into a story. And at some point we have a chance to take a look at and give some input. Now granted this is Ford’s opinion of Lucas’ “creative process”, yet still: when one of the three principals of the Indiana Jones legacy classifies the story creation process as a haphazard, one-man effort that only superficially ...
