GeekTyrant —
This short film, Panic Attack! also known as Ataque de Pánico! is freakin awesome! It’s definitely one of the best things you will have seen all day! The film is a epic five minute short that was directed and animated by, Fede Alvarez. This is much bigger than what Neil Blomkamp did with his Alive in Joberg. We have a talented future filmmaker in the making.

Some days I love the internet. Today is one of those days, because without the internet I never would have seen this short film from Uruguay, which depicts a giant robot attack on Montevideo (true fact: my only reference point for Montevideo is that Grant Morrison blew it up in some DC Comics crossover). It's the kind of thing that gives genre fans hope that we can get spectacle and coolness on a budget and not have to settle for 500 million dollar overblown behemoths. Of course I'm sure they saved some money by snagging music from 28 Days Later , but struggling young filmmakers gotta do what they gotta do. Found via Twitch. ...

Is Fede Alvarez The "New Neill Blomkamp"? Watch Robot Invasion Short, 'Panic Attack!'
:: The Playlist :: —
[image] Ok, this is actually pretty great and gotta say the use of John Murphy 's apocalyptic " 28 Days Later " score (still one of the best from this decade), really puts this one over-the-top into the "wow, this kinda rules" category. Apparently Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez has taken Hollywood by storm this week thanks to his almost five minute short film, " Panic Attack !" ("Ataque de Pánico!") that has drawn some comparisons to Neill Blomkamp 's " District 9 " because of its lo-fi, shaky-cam, documentarian depiction of a random and terrifying robot invasion (very " Iron Giant ") on Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. It actually feels like a crazy ...

A must-see with your morning breakfast…At just under 5 minutes, its amazing!!
From HeatVisionBlog.com:
“Panic Attack!” is a short from a Uruguayan filmmaker named Fede Alvarez. He made the short for about $300, according to people in the know, and hit YouTube two weeks ago. Almost immediately the calls from Hollywood came, from the agencies to the production companies, with comparisons to Neill Blomkamp being thrown around.
Alvarez has been in town this week, with everyone doing a full-court press to sign this guy and to have him aligned with their projects. ...
Is the Director of the Short Film “Panic Attack!” the Next Neill Blomkamp?
Film Junk —
Just two weeks after his short film Panic Attack! hit YouTube, everyone in Hollywood now wants a piece of Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez. The four-minute short was reportedly shot for just $300 and features robots and UFOs wreaking havoc on a city. I have to admit, it’s pretty impressive stuff, and the comparisons to Neill Blomkamp may be warranted even if it doesn’t have quite the same gritty realism or the social commentary to accompany it. (On the other hand, maybe he’ll just turn out to be the next Kerry Conran.)
In general, I think it’s pretty cool that an innovative short film can get a director noticed ...
Federico Alvarez Starts A Robotic Panic Attack For Sam Raimi
Cinema Blend News —
Federico Alvarez Starts A Robotic Panic Attack For Sam Raimi Everyone should know the story behind District 9 by now. Panic Attack! Director Lands Sci-fi Director Gig for Sam Raimi
GeekTyrant —
Earlier this month we showed you a awesome looking short film called Panic Attack! The film is a epic five minute short that was directed and animated by, Fede Alvarez. This is much bigger than what Neil Blomkamp did with his Alive in Joberg. As soon as I finished watching this video I knew for a fact that Hollywood had a new talented filmmaker and it wouldn’t be long before he got his first major directing gig.
Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures has signed a contract with Federico Alvarez to direct a $30 to 40 million sci-fi film for them. This will be his first ...
Raimi signs Ataque de Pánico! (Panic Attack!) director
Filmstalker —
PanicAttack.jpg Uruguyan director Federico Alvarez created a short film, less than five minutes in length, that showed the destruction of a city by an invading force of flying machines and gigantic robots. The scenes of destruction and the merging of CG and the landscape around them are superbly done, and the closing idea is interesting. However there's not much else. So it's a surprise that on the strength of that short, which you can see below, Alvarez received offers from DreamWorks, Fox, Warner Bros. and the Weinstein Company, and even more surprising that out of all of them he has signed a deal with Sam Raimi's much smaller production company. Ghost House ...

SAM RAIMI IS HAVING A PANIC ATTACK
CHUD.com - A Movie Website and SO MUCH MORE. - Articles - News —
A week or so ago I ran a short film in the 'Watch This Now' column; Panic Attack is an Uruguayan scifi short about a bunch of giant robots attacking Montevideo. Done on a low budget but with an expansive imagination, Panic Attack managed to thrill ten times as much as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen but with a fraction of the running time. Now the director of that short, Fede Alvarez, is reaping the internet buzz he sowed. Ghost House, Sam Raimi's production company, has signed a deal with Alvarez based on an original alien invasion concept he pitched to them. The film would be made on the cheap, and Ghost House is now looking for a writer to turn the ...

Fede Alvarez scored his million-dollar deal based on the excitement generated by Ataque de panico! Director Sam Raimi’s Ghost House production company has won the bidding war for the rights to Panic Attack! Based on a cracking short film by Uryguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez, the city of Montevideo is attacked by giant robots and they blow everything up: it’s quite a calling card. There’s even a cheeky blink-and-you’ll-miss-it reference to The Battleship Potemkin. The Hollywood Reporter notes the director was whipped over to the US for a plethora of meetings in the past few weeks, before signing on the dotted line with ...

This one goes out to those of you who are clamoring for a sequel to this year’s sci-fi surprise District 9. Sam Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures shingle have won the rights to Panic Attack!, a short film concept by Uruguayan filmmaker Federico Alvarez. The short, which has been tearing up the YouTubes for months now, is reminiscent of Alive in Joburg, the short that director Neill Blomkamp used to get the attention of Peter Jackson, leading to the production of District 9.
According to Uruguayan newspaper El Pais, with help from the folks at Film Junk, Alvarez ...

A note to all you directors posting your short films online: keep it up and you just might get a seven-figure deal from Sam Raimi. Fede Alvarez posted his $500 short film ATAQUE DE PANICO! Ghost House Pictures has a Panic Attack
Screen Rant —
There is another robot film coming out, but before you groan, it doesn’t have Michael Bay (Transformers), McG (Terminator) or Shawn Levy (Real Steel) attached. This one is called Panic Attack has a director you’ve most likely have never heard of attached, Fede Alvarez. That name might not make your ears perk up (yet) but this one will: Sam Raimi.
Raimi’s production company Ghost House Pictures (Drag Me to Hell, 30 Days of Night: Dark Days) has won a bidding war between a bunch of major studios to sign a seven-figure deal with ...

The deal, in the six- against seven-figure range, will see Ghost House hire a writer for the project, which is based on an idea by Alvarez. ...says THR HERE . I mean: we're in an age where people like you ...
'Panic Attack' Picked Up By Sam Raimi, Channels 'District 9,' 'War Of The Worlds'
MTV Movies Blog —
I hate to make comparisons, but they are exceedingly apt in this case. One of the best movies of the year, in my book at least, was "District 9." The unconventional alien "invasion" sci-fi flick started as a made-for-Internet short under the direction of Neill Blomkamp. Producer Peter Jackson partnered up with the fledgling filmmaker, a collaboration which resulted in the feature-length "District 9."
The moral of the story? There's a lot of untouched talent out there, waiting to be found. Case in point: Fede Alvarez. The Uruguayan filmmaker is making waves on the Internet today with "Panic Attack!," a sci-fi short ...
HOW TO BE DISCOVERED BY HOLLYWOOD, 2009 EDITION
Filmmaker Magazine —
In the wake of District 9 and the effectiveness of its viral campaign, studios are looking for budget-conscious, effects-skilled directing talent. Reports the Heat Vision blog , Uruguayan director Fede Alvarez, who has been making shorts since 2001, posted a no-budget (reportedly less than $500) short depicting a robot attack on the town of Montevideo. The short went up in early November, the industry took notice, and the director signed with CAA and Anonymous Content just before the Thanksgiving holiday. He now has a deal with Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures to develop an original project. The short is cool and impressive for such a tiny budget, but ...
Panic Attack Short Film Review

Panic Attack!/Ataque de Pánico! (2009) is a short film out of Uruguay by Federico Alvarez. It is an amazing accomplishment for only $500; of course a lot of time, effort, and favors helped it along. There is not much of a story other than the robots coming to attack. Still, I was entertained and thought it was well put together. The music sounds like a track from 28 Weeks Later. You can watch the five minute film below. ...

Budgets are getting tighter, but sci-fi directors seem to be getting more creative. Is this one genre that might just boom in the crunch? Sir Ben Kingsley himself was in India ...

Panic Attack and YouTube Discovery
The Chutry Experiment —
One of the underlying narratives associated with Hollywood mythology is the “discovery story,” the idea that a talented newcomer emerges by chance, out of nowhere, to become a Hollywood “star.” Lana Turner was discovered, so the legend goes, on a barstool at Schwab’s drugstore. Now, as the tools of filmmaking and film distribution have been democratized, those discovery stories have expanded to filmmakers as well. And although it is the case that such stories can be read ideologically, it is also true that YouTube and other video sharing sites still offer us the opportunity to be astonished by the talents of an aspiring ...
YouTube Video Lands $30m Movie Deal
HeyUGuys - UK Movie Blog —
This is the stuff of legend, and as a million hungry directors pile onto Youtube it marks another step towards the internet, and Youtube in particular, becoming the place for your showreel to be discovered.
Uruguayan Fede Alvarez uploaded his short film Ataque de Pánico to the video sharing website and so far it has had upwards of one and a half million hits.
More of a visual effects demonstration than a straight ahead narrative the short is dripping with atmosphere and depicts an invasion of Montevideo by an army of giant robots.

Fede Alvarez uploaded a $300 and probably 3 good months (guessing) 4 minute short about giant robots and space ships that attack and destroy a city. What did that clip earn him? The BBC has more:

YouTube Video Nets Filmmaker a Multi-million Dollar Deal
Inside Pulse Movies —
It wouldn’t surprise me that some day, when the Best Director envelope is opened and the name is announced, a filmmaker who got his start with videos posted on YouTube will win. When Spielberg was a novice at being a filmmaker as a kid, he didn’t have the luxury to share his films with the world. Now because of sites like YouTube a person can get a lucrative Hollywood deal. And that’s just what happened to Fede Alvarez, a producer from Uruguay.
He ponied up three-hundred dollars to create a video about a robot invasion in the capital of Uruguay, Montevideo. Titled Ataque de Panico! (Panic Attack), the four-minute ...
