Oscars Biggest Snub: Not Honoring Don LaFontaine
Cinematical —
So every year the Academy Awards does their little In Memoriam montage where they honor those who've passed throughout the year. Queen Latifah sang over the montage for this year's ceremony, which, of course, included lots but excluded a few -- most notably 'The Voice of God' himself, Don LaFontaine, who passed away back in September. LaFontaine, in case you forgot or didn't know, was an actor, producer and writer who provided voiceover for pretty much every trailer ever made (okay not that many, but he is the voice of more than 5,000 movie trailers and hundreds of thousands of television commercials, video game trailers and network promotions). ...
Oscar's Snubbed Don "The Voice" LaFontaine
Hacking NetFlix —

Bubblegum Aesthetics —
Comics writer/pop culture blogger Mark Evanier notes that the Academy has now posted the "In Memoriam" montage on YouTube, finally allowing us to see what the remarkably misguided show producers and director ignored with their hyperactive, performance-obsessed camera. It's actually a lovely short film, and Queen Latifah's voice works beautifully over the images (as several critics have noted, they should have just had her pre-record the track over the film in the first place, thus sparing us the confusing split between remembrance and live performance). As Evanier points out, it's not perfect: Patrick McGoohan ...
A Much Improved "In Memoriam"
Eternal Sunshine Of The Logical Mind —
From Roger Ebert's Journal : This is a wonderful set of choices for the clips and it's nice to be able to see them all put together like this. It's pretty much the video they showed during the Oscars, but the constantly moving camera and different screens took the focus away from the purpose of the segment - to honour and remember those who have passed. I find it's much more powerful and respectful simply shown like this. Apparently not many people agree with my overall thoughts though (ratings up 13%, many critical and blog raves for the telecast). Oh well.
