Venice ‘08: “The Wrestler,” Rourke Set for a Superlative Comeback, Nice!

[image] I know “The Wrestler” is going to be a great movie, just by judging from the massive talent involved. I don’t even mind saying it, because when it comes to the likes of Aronofsky, Tomei and Rachel Wood, I am biased beyond words. So you can imagine the smile, if you can call it that, on my face when I hit the links to the reviews below and found out that my bias might just be rewarded. But someone I have never taken all that seriously, that being Mickey Rourke, has garnered stellar, gushing reviews for his performance as a wrestler who has long passed his sell by date. Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler appears to be a big hit at the 65th Venice Film Festival. The Hollywood Reporter claims that the film created “a buzz that had been absent for most of the festival.” Anne Thompson reports that the film is hoping to land a distributor which could “ramp up a release before year’s end so that [Mickey] Rourke can qualify for Oscar consideration” making a December release very likely.
Here is a small excerpt from Variety’s review: “Talk about comebacks. After many years in the wilderness and ...

Talk about a flat festival. This year Venice really amounted to almost nothing, in my humble, outsider’s opinion. I have always thought it to be the most glamorous, perhaps prestigious festival in the world, with the exception of Cannes, which it may very well be, but compared to other years it definitely seems to have made an abnormally ...

A few days ago, the only thing I really knew about Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler was that Mickey Rourke was in it and looked like Dog The Bounty Hunter had lit his hair on fire, put it out with baby oil and then shaved his beard off (see above). Today is very, very different.
Because today I know better. I’ll admit to not following the film very closely because - gasp - I’m not a huge Aronofsky fan. I can defend myself later, but for now, I’m still recovering from the barrage of praise for his new film.
If I didn’t get the picture when it won the Golden Lion at Venice, I ...
