Star Wars 3D and New Trilogy is a Lie
The Movie Blog —
... my outer geek) heard that Lucasfilm was planning on remastering the Star Wars films in 3D, and that a new Trilogy was planned.
After I regained consciousness and changed my shorts I realized this had to be too good to be true. Well it seems that it was total bullshit and far more cruel than my April Fools gag because as soon as people saw the date, they knew it was a trick.
But as calmer minds prevailed, it turns out the whole thing is just unfounded.

Rumor of a New 3D STAR WARS Trilogy Doesn’t Hold Up to Scrutiny, Common Sense

... But because this was such a sensational rumor, Eric Vespe over at Ain’t It Cool had to take time out of his day to send the Laura Wuhlhammer of Lucasfilm’s Public Relations department an e-mail asking her to confirm or deny the rumor. She, of course, denied it. I imagine Vespe then sighed, looked at the clock, and knew he would never get those 90 seconds back. ...
LucasFilm Denies Rumors of a New 'Star Wars' Trilogy
Get The Big Picture —
It shouldn't really be a surprise to you if you learned George Lucas was working on a third Star Wars trilogy. As long as I can remember, the talk was of nine movies, anyway. That stopped after Jedi, and 15 years later, when Lucas embarked on the rather pedestrian Anakin trilogy, he made it clear he wasn't thinking about chapters seven, eight, and nine.
Market Saw says it has learned that Lucas has warmed up to the idea recently, and would like to pursue the final trilogy in 3-D. A ...

Kudos to Ain't It Cool for doing what MarketSaw should have done in the first place. You know, proper journalism. ...

... Now if this story is true, it would be the scoop of Marketsaw's young life. Naturally, then, many of the other more established US movie blogs have spent a fair bit of time doing their best to pooh-pooh it. Ain't It Cool News went so far as to contact Lucasfilm, which predictably said that it is not considering future Star Wars live-action films. ...
A New 'Star Wars' Trilogy Directed by Spielberg and Coppola?

... fansite for awhile now, continually mention in their piece that Avatar has to do well in theaters in order for this new Star Wars trilogy to happen since Lucas wants the films in 3D and needs more theaters to come equipped with 3D technology. As AICN points out, it seems like someone at Fox is spinning a marketing web by putting the thought in folks' heads that if they go see Avatar, they'll be helping to bring new Star Wars movies to life. ...
'Star Wars' Trilogy Rumor Hilarity Today Around The Blogosphere

... "shenanigans!" followed quickly of course, with Ain't It Cool News leading the charge. A couple of e-mails to Lucasfilm's PR team confirmed that (1) no 3-D "Star Wars" projects are in the works and (2) no theatrical "Star Wars" movies are planned. AICN is quick to point out that Lucasfilm would likely be the last to confirm such a rumor, but they keep their red flag raised primarily because the rumor story mentions Francis Ford Coppola, who isn't too keen on franchises.
