The nominations for the 81st Academy Awards were announced this morning. I always find this day very exciting, with tea and highlighter handy to make predictions. The noms came in high for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button leading with 13, Slumdog Millionaire has 10, Milk & The Dark Knight tie for 8 a piece. The Academy has spoken, and while I haven't had a chance to check out any of the other commentaries out there yet, I did want to note one or two things. Fanboys may be disappointed that neither The Dark Knight nor WALL•E were nominated for Best Picture. We've had a CG-animated film win an Oscar ('Toy Story' won a special award in 1995, and 'Shrek' won in 2001, when the Best Animated Feature Film category was created.) We've had a digitally-edited film win an Oscar ('The English Patient,' in 1996, was edited using an Avid, as was 'Titanic' in 1997.) We've had lots of Best Visual Effects winners that have relied on computers. But what have we never had, so far?
