Variety reports that Catherine Hardwicke, who guided Stephenie Meyer’s teen novel Twilight to the big screen, will not direct its sequel, New Moon. Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the new hit movie franchise and Hardwicke both cited differences in prep time for the film. Summit, not surprisingly wants to get it going as soon as possible; Hardwicke, concerned about the amount of CGI necessary to handle the ...

THE DARK OF THE MATINEE —
Saturday night I changed up my movie-going routine a little bit, and decided to go see a screening at one of Toronto's second-run theatres. I used to watch movies at theatres like The Kingsway, The Paradise, and The Music Hall all the time...but these days I usually find myself succumbing to stadium-seat comfort. But after almost a year of living in the neighbourhood, I figured it was about time I went to see a movie at The Regent. Like I say, it's been a while since I went to a "B" theatre, and I was not expecting the place to be so nice. Cozy but not teeny, and staffed by very ...
Hardwicke Off Twilight Sequels. Trade Roughage 12/08/08
SpoutBlog —
In a huge blow to women in film, Catherine Harwicke was officially announced to be exiting the Twilight franchise after a weekend of rumors. Summit Entertainment’s press release politely claims the decision was rather mutual because the first sequel, New Moon, is being rushed into production yet Hardwicke desired more prep time. Gossip in the blogs, however, says it had more to do with the director being difficult during the first film’s shoot. Whatever the reason, Summit will be pressured to hire another female filmmaker. I bet Lexi Alexander could use the gig after her miserable weekend. ...

The Screengrab —
Four Christmases remains atop the box office chart, earning an additional $18.2 million over the weekend. The first weekend could have been an accident, but now the blame falls squarely on you, America. The third attempt at launching a Punisher franchise should mercifully be the last, as Punisher: War Zone took in a measly $4 million. Nixon now, more than ever? Frost/Nixon raked in $180,147, which may not look like much until you consider that the film is only playing in three theaters. Potential awards contenders Milk and Slumdog Millionaire also did well in limited release. ...
Rant: Catherine Hardwicke Was Fired Because She's A Woman
Cinema Blend News —
Rant: Catherine Hardwicke Was Fired Because She's A Woman I'm no Twilight fanatic, but I too am outraged that Catherine Hardwicke has been tossed out for sequel New Moon . Set aside the fact that she trimmed the overlong book into two mostly watchable hours, or that she was the one who cast Robert Pattinson, the face that launched 1,000 teenage crushes. Catherine Hardwicke was fired because she's a woman, and that's bullshit. Official explanations abound, from Hardwicke having a different vision for the screenplay to Summit's official explanation that it doesn't fit into ...
