Our good buddy, former Marvel master and Toy Tycoon - Avi Arad is producing this to be a live action 3D movie according to Variety . This is a tremendous project. Being one of only a handful of Japanese anime feature films I have seen (and one of even fewer that I even halfway liked), GHOST IN THE SHELL is a brilliant film. Under the direction of Mamoru Oshii, it features stunning visuals and a complex narrative that, unlike a lot of anime, doesn’t lose you halfway through if you aren’t taking notes. So, it pains me to hear that DreamWorks is moving forward with their proposed, live action remake.

Laeta Kalogridis ("Shutter Island," "Alexander") will pen the script for the 3D live-action American adaptation of classic Japanese manga "Ghost in the Shell" for DreamWorks Pictures says Variety.
The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.
The 1989 manga lead to anime film and TV adaptations, most notably Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film "Ghost in the Shell" which is considered a cornerstone of the genre and one of the first films of the genre to crossover outside Japan.

Weirdly, there's no mention of Steven Spielberg any more, who was really hyping it up when news came out last year. Variety reports that Dreamworks is revving up for the inevitable live action 3D adaptation of Shirow Masamune’s “Ghost in the Shell”. The Japanese comic book that turned into three animated films and a television series is the latest casualty in the expanding list of Japanese manga adaptations. Dreamworks has already picked up Laeta Kalogridis to write the film with no director attached at the moment. Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul are all producing with Seaside Entertainment a part of this feature.

There has been talk of a live action Ghost in The Shell for some time now, and while I knew that a US remake was probably inevitable, there was still a small part of me that thought that maybe this time, we would be spared another inferior North American 're-imagining' of a pretty spectacular anime. But I guess I'm not that lucky, because Variety is now reporting that Dreamworks has just hired Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) to adapt the manga for a live action 3D film, bring the film that much closer to reality.

Recently Variety reported that Laeta Kalogridis was hired to adapt the famous manga/anime GHOST IN THE SHELL (GITS) for DreamWorks Pictures. Kalogridis certainly understands the idea of a mechanically altered agent, since she was one of the producers and writers on the short lived remake of THE BIONIC WOMAN for Universal/NBC. Her grasp of female heroines is strong as seen with her writing for The WB’s BIRDS OF PREY. Her biggest job to date was the upcoming SHUTTER ISLAND. She’s taking over the job of writer on this project from Jamie Moss, who originally was pulled on to write.
