"My guess is, given other things, that I will not be directing the movie." Abrams also addressed rumors that MTV seems to have made up that Cruise wouldn't be in this new movie. "I don't want to give anything away yet, but I will say that it's a story that will feel consistent with the world that has been created," he explained. "It's not a reboot kind of thing." My guess: they're ...
J.J. Abrams may not accept another MISSION
gordonandthewhale.com —
... But Abrams may not be responsible for a MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE IV, as he told MTV that he would be producing the film with Tom Cruise yet “My guess is, given other things, that I will not be directing the movie.” Seeing as how each film has been directed by someone different (I was Brian DePalma, II was John Woo), this just keeps in the tradition of the series. While I love Abrams, I also love to see different visions of the same characters. ...

Abrams Won't Direct 'M:I4' But Promises It Will Be Cool

... about it. My hope is that when the script comes in — the dream would be that we could shoot this soon"
For the record, I loved "M:I 3." I feel it is a tense, emotional, truly underrated spy flick with awesome action scenes. Definitely the best of the series, by far. It also introduced the idea of a TEAM into the franchise, which up till then had been the Tom Cruise show. Anything Abrams and his talented writers have cooked up will surely be exciting. Source: MTV

... • Mission: Impossible III wasn't exactly a great movie, but it had some fun set-pieces and a sense of team espionage that made it the best of the trilogy; so when news came that Abrams and Cruise are gearing up for a fourth film, I held out hope. But the script is now in the works, and it looks like this thing might shoot sooner than later. Given Abrams' more likely commitment to Star Trek, will he be able to come back to directing duties?
