Variety has news from the Walt Disney Showcase today. One of the biggest announcements was about Cars 2, the sequel to 2006’s Cars: the studio is so excited about the amount of money the first movie has racked up that it plans to bump the second film’s release up from 2012 to summer 2012. Until then, the studio hopes to keep the film in the public eye by producing a number of short cartoons featuring the Cars characters. The shorts will be shown in theaters before movies and on TV.

Additionally, at a special Disney event, in which the studio showcased it’s slate for exhibitors, Depp confirmed his role as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s 3-D performance capture Alice in Wonderland and announced that he’ll play Tonto in Disney/Bruckheimer’s The Lone Ranger. It sure seems like it at least. At a press event shin dig yesterday, the Mouse House announced that Johnny Depp will be staring in three of there future tentpole pictures. Jack Sparrow will be back in the alluded to sequel at the end of the third film, Sparrow will be the focus of the picture; though I guarntee Barbosa and Will Turner will make apperances. He will also star as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burtons mo-cap 3-D adaptaion of Alice in Wonderland. On top of all of this, he is also planning on playing Tonto in a new adaptation of the Loan Ranger.
